It is running, but… the clutch doesn’t disengage

Well everything is moving along nicely.  Finally got the car running and it sounds great.  It took a couple of hours to go through the break in process, changed the oil to take the car for a drive, and… the clutch won’t disengage.  Feels like this car isn’t going to make it on the road before the snow comes. I’ve already had one volunteer indicate they would push me around the block if it comes to it.

One of the experiments in this car was to try an RTS clutch.  This appears to be an excellent alternative to switching everything out to a pre verto clutch and was fairly easy.  In the picture below you can see the double up’d fingers on the revised pressure plate.

Now the hope is that making this change isn’t want is causing me the trouble.  Unfortunately it is looking more and more like I am going to have to try and get the clutch cover off and see how exactly this thing was put together…

As an aside here is a link to instructions on the RTS clutch. http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php?p=vt&tid=437563

Engine and gearbox are built

Last night was a big night as we bolted the engine and gearbox together.  I realize that I have been very delinquent in my updates and there will be some catch up that is done on the whole build process, but I may still get to drive the mini before the snow flys….

Here is a shot of the gearbox.  It took a bit of work, but I finally got it back together with the new baulk ring.  Not sure what I am going to do with the old one as it is the source of all this craziness.

Here is another shot with the new LSD insalled!  Not sure how long the old one was going to make it.

Parts Order #2

Well the last of the parts arrived for the gearbox including a limited slip diff and the synchro parts that are needed to repair second gear.  The issue that started this whole adventure.  Now I am running out of excuses for why the rebuild isn’t done.  So before this month is up I hope to actually show some real progress again…

Gearbox & Suspension Teardown

Well I finally made some good progress in the last week.  The suspension and everything tied to the front sub-frame has been taken off.  The sub-frame has been cleaned up and soon it will be ready to be repainted!

The gearbox is also finally apart.  Next step is ordering a rebuild kit and a cross pin diff.

Jesse has also started porting and polishing the head. I had some pictures, but they didn’t come through on the camera to well.

So… hopefully it wont be long before everything starts to get built again.  I would just like to do a bit of cleanup on the engine bay before I head back to Madagascar.  Who knows by the end of summer I might actually be putting everything back in the car… well maybe. 🙂

Gear Box tear down

I didn’t take any pictures, but I have made it half way through tearing down the gear box.  I am just planning out what parts will be purchased.  I don’t want to use straight cut drops and I am hoping I can sort out an alternative.  I have seen some interesting posts where others have tried to deal with the loading on the idler gear including using a fixed shaft with tapered roller bearings or needle thrust bearings between the idler gear and the case.   We will see… a little more research is needed.

I will however definitely be upgrading the diff to a cross pin diff from Mini Spares plus a rebuild kit to deal with the grinding in second gear.  The second gear trouble is what started all this craziness. 🙂
